Hama \u2013 In cooperation with the UN\u2019s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Syria has resumed rehabilitation works on an irrigation canal in the Al-Ghab plain, in northwestern Hama. The canal irrigates approximately 19,000 hectares of agricultural land. The Al-Ghab plain is a fertile region of Syria, located between mountains and a mountain range and drained by the Orontes River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The resumption of the works aims to increase water efficiency and minimize agricultural losses, state news agency SANA<\/a> reported on Monday (30). The project involves restoring about 2.5 kilometers of the canal, known as J2, with reinforced concrete lining, as well as cleaning more than 10 kilometers of drainage channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The head of the General Authority for Al-Ghab Development, Abdulaziz al-Qassem, said on Sunday (29) that the project aims to improve water flow and provide farmers with easier access to water. The canal is a vital part of the region\u2019s irrigation system.
