S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 The Syrian Arab Cultural Centre is going to promote the exhibition \u201cThe Gleam of Arab Art in Brazil,\u201d featuring 13 pictures by the fine artist Gracia Saad Calado. The show is due to start on April 26th, will remain open for 20 days, and admittance is free. <\/p>\n
Saad is the daughter to a Syrian father and a Brazilian mother. Born in S\u00e3o Paulo, she explains that she discovered her flare for the arts as a child, took a course in illustration, started out painting porcelain, and since 1993 she has dedicated herself exclusively to picture painting.<\/p>\n
Her works combine Arab and Brazilian themes. \u201cI painted the Amazon, Brazilian plants, and there is an Indian woman too,\u201d she says of the pictures in the show. \u201cAs for the Arab themes, there are women shopping, women under a date palm, and women dancing dabke.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dancing, by the way, is among her main interests. \u201cMy family has always been joyful, my father used to dance dabke when I was little and I used to dance with him. We have always cherished this dance,\u201d she says. At age 67, Saad has her works exhibited in countries such as Italy, the United States and Spain. The pictures at the Cultural Centre will be available for sale.<\/p>\n
