A mission from the International Monetary Fund (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IMF<\/a>) met with Syrian authorities in the capital, Damascus, from July 19 to 23. On Tuesday (August 4), the Fund released its conclusions from those meetings, stating that the economy is expanding, partly driven by higher consumption and the return of approximately 1.5 million refugees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the IMF, Syria&#8217;s economy began recovering in 2025 as consumer and investor confidence improved alongside the country&#8217;s reintegration into the global economy. Even a severe drought that struck the country last year and affected agricultural production was not enough to halt the recovery. For this year, the Fund expects the economy to achieve &#8220;double-digit growth,&#8221; despite the ongoing conflict across the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This growth is being driven by rainfall that has boosted agricultural output, expanding hydrocarbon production and electricity supply, as well as stronger trade and services. &#8220;Economic activity is supported by the continuing return of refugees, a large increase in visitors, and more generally by the authorities\u2019 policies aimed at restoring macro-economic stability and achieving a strong, private-sector-led recovery&#8221;, said Ron van Rooden, head of the IMF mission to Syria, in a statement released by the Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IMF expects economic growth to remain strong next year, although it is likely to continue unevenly across Syria&#8217;s regions, where poverty rates remain high. Inflation is expected to stay elevated this year due to stronger consumer demand and the high cost of importing fuel and food.
