S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 Art and architecture fans may view the work of artist Cristiane Carbone starting on May 24th, in the Syrian Arab Cultural Centre, in S\u00e3o Paulo. The exhibition shows paintings of S\u00e3o Paulo and Arab buildings in the city from the 19th Century to the current day.<\/p>\n
"I am going to take works that tell the story of S\u00e3o Paulo, its past and its present, and also works that show the Arab architecture in the city,\u201d said Carbone. Among the works of Arab influence is the Casa da Boia shop, on Flor\u00eancio de Abreu Street, and Nossa Senhora da Anuncia\u00e7\u00e3o Church, the first Orthodox Cathedral in the country, in the 25 March Street region.<\/p>\n
Carbone says he always liked painting landscapes and started dedicating herself to agricultural works after an order by a client. Speaking to friends in the Arab community, she thought she could contribute to preservation of history. \u201cI want to recover the history of the Arab community to justify the development of S\u00e3o Paulo,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Apart from the shop and the church, the artist also wants to paint Brazil Mosque, in the central region of the city, the orthodox church of Para\u00edso neighbourhood and some buildings on Ipiranga Avenue that, to her, are representative of Arab architecture in S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/p>\n
Among the works to be shown at the Cultural Centre, several are based on pictures of the city of S\u00e3o Paulo in previous decades, like the P\u00e1tio do Col\u00e9gio in 1862, Vale do Anhangaba\u00fa in 1949 and the Law School in S\u00e3o Francisco Square in 1950, among others.<\/p>\n
At 39 years of age, the artist already has 9 awards. Two of the pictures to be shown at the exhibition, Avenida Paulista (1902) and Catedral da S\u00e9, are among her award-winning works. <\/p>\n
Carbone also explains that several personalities have her works, among them S\u00e3o Paulo mayor Gilberto Kassab, the deputy governor of the state of S\u00e3o Paulo, Guilherme Afif Domingos, and Pope Benedict XVI.<\/p>\n
On the day of the opening of the exhibition, there will also be a dance and poetry presentation by group Movimento Po\u00e9tico Nacional, at 7:30 pm.<\/p>\n
