The projection of total tonnage picked is 1.9% greater than that obtained in the same period in 2010/2011. The highlight goes to production of maize, with growth of 71.7% over the last crop.

Ribeiro celebrated the “country’s largest crop” and said that the result may cause a revision in the projected 170 million tonnes forecasted for the 2012/2013 Crop Plan. “We may reach the 170 million tonnes this year,” he said.

“This is the news that further strengthens Brazilian farmers and shows that the country is more and more heading towards an agricultural policy with objective results for production,” said Mendes Ribeiro after a meeting with president Dilma Rousseff regarding the crop results.

The grain crop could be even larger, said Mendes, had production not suffered losses due to the droughts in the Northeast and South. The crop in the Northeast, for example, dropped 22% over the last crop. In the minister’s evaluation, the record production should contribute to growth of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). "Brazil is a country which has in agriculture a spring for growth.”

For sugarcane, the forecast is 6.5% greater production, rising from 560.36 million tonnes in the last crop to 596.63 million tonnes in the current cycle, according to the National Food Supply Company (Conab). According to the 2nd 2012/2013 Sugarcane Crop Study, the land turned to sugarcane crops should also rise, from 8.35 million hectares to 8.52 million hectares.

The expected growth in production of sugar is 8.41%, rising from 35.97 million tonnes to 38.99 million. Total production of ethanol should grow 3.21%, growing from 22.76 billion litres to 23.49 billion. Anhydrous ethanol (used in production of petrol) should register growth of 6.85%, and hydrated ethanol (used in dual fuel vehicles) has an expected growth of 0.98%.

Earlier, the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE) disclosed its estimates for the national grain crop. In 2012, it should reach 163.3 million tonnes, 2% more than that obtained in 2011 (160.1 million tonnes) and 1.6% more than the June estimate. The institute’s Systematic Agricultural Production Study is a monthly follow-up of crops of the main agricultural products.

*Translated by Mark Ament

Mendes Ribeiro (Agriculture) said that Brazilian grain production should reach 166 million tonnes this year.
