This should be to reduce bureaucracy for the purchase of reals, said the author of the proposal, Francisco Dornelles (PP-RJ). The article forecasts that, up to this value, it will be unnecessary to present the foreign Exchange form required by the Central Bank of Brazil.

The project has been approved by the Economic Affairs Commission (CAE) of the senate and should now be analysed by the Lower House. The proposal allows the Federal Government to increase the value through the emission of a norm in case it considers it necessary.

"The project, apart from reducing bureaucracy for the exchange of dollars for reals for tourism should supply the demand generated by the great sports events, like the FIFA Confederations Cup, in 2013; the World Cup, in 2014, and the Olympics, in 2016," said Dornelles.

The parliament member said that the measure should not affect Central Bank inspection on financial enterprises developing the activity. According to Dornelles, the measure alters a law from 1962 and reduces bureaucracy on operations at exchange houses and banks.

*Translated by Mark Ament

The Brazilian senate has approved a limit of US$ 10,000 for purchase and sale of dollars at exchange houses.
