The number of deals was down 27% from the same period in 2011, when 11 transactions took place.

“The industry was waiting on the government’s announcement of a new round of a tender for exploration blocks. This concern was reflected on survey figures, which pointed to a slight decline in operations. Nonetheless, positive signalling has occurred, therefore we believe expectations for the next few years are good, and investor appetite should increase steadily, especially considering pre-salt layer exploration,” says KPMG partner Paulo Guilherme Coimbra.

A report released this Monday (12th) by the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that Brazilian oil production will increase by 3.5 million barrels per day by 2035. The survey considers an average extraction of 2.2 million of barrels per day in 2011, which may increase to 4 million by 2020 and 5.7 million by 2035. It is the second highest growth estimate, the highest being Iraq’s.

Besides, according to the IEA, Petrobras ranks as the second leading investor in the oil industry in 2012, with US$ 47.3 billion. The company’s projects focus on oil exploration and extraction, according to the survey. The amount to be invested by Petrobras is second only to that of Petrochina, China’s state-owned oil company, which is expected to allocate US$ 48 billion to new projects this year.

Of the eight operations during the quarter, five were domestic, that is, among Brazilian companies. There was one transaction involving the purchase of a Brazilian-owned company by a foreign capital company, another involving the purchase of a foreign-owned Brazil-based company by a Brazilian company, and another involving the purchase of a foreign-owned Brazil-based company by a foreign capital company.

Year-to-date through September 30th, merger and acquisition activity also declined slightly, at 16 deals this year as against 18 deals in the same period of 2011. The survey is conducted on a quarterly basis, and covers mergers and acquisitions announced and completed during the period surveyed.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

The number of mergers and acquisitions in the industry in Brazil were down in quarter three, according to a survey by KPMG.
