S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 One of the leading importers of Brazilian beef, Saudi Arabia has temporarily banned imports of the product. The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture was notified of the ban this Monday (17th), and claimed it has already begun submitting the documents demanded by the Saudis to prove that the Brazilian herd is healthy. <\/p>\n
The Saudi import ban was announced last Friday (14th) by the General Authority of Foods and Drugs due to the news, disclosed on December 7th, that an animal infected with mad cow disease died in 2010 in the state of Paran\u00e1. <\/p>\n
The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture informed that the Saudis requested detailed explanations about the illness found in Paran\u00e1. According to the Ministry, the case was rated \u201cnon-classical\u201d because although the animal was contaminated with the agent that causes mad cow disease, it did not develop the condition, and died from other causes instead. <\/p>\n
Ever since the Ministry released information regarding this case, Japan, China and South Africa have banned Brazilian beef imports. Egypt, another major importer of the Brazilian product, announced restrictions solely to beef from Paran\u00e1, the state in which the infected animal died. <\/p>\n
The Ministry of Agriculture informed that it is already in the process of submitting the information requested by the Saudis, and that it has also deployed its \u201cdiplomatic body\u201d overseas to supply the clarifications required. The ministry\u2019s press advisor said Brazilian technicians may be sent to countries which call for eventual additional clarification. <\/p>\n
Saudi Arabia is one of the leading importers of Brazilian beef. From January to November this year, the country imported US$ 107.1 million worth of frozen beef, and US$ 43.6 million worth of fresh beef. In the same period of 2011, frozen beef imports stood at US$ 80.6 million and fresh beef imports stood at US$ 40.4 million. <\/p>\n
