S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 Last Thursday evening (17th), the United Nations (UN) secretary general Ban Ki-moon appointed the Jordanian Ahmad Alhindawi as the organization\u2019s new envoy on youth. Alhindawi, aged 28, will be in charge of assessing the main needs of young people worldwide. <\/p>\n
A UN spokesperson said the new envoy must also pay heed to the needs of women. \u201cthe secretary-general in his five-year action agenda identified \u2018working with and for women and young people\u2019 as one of his top priorities, the spokesperson added in a note to the media. \u201cIn this context, the Envoy on Youth will work to address the needs of the largest generation of youth the world has ever known,\u201d said the spokesperson. <\/p>\n
Since December 2012, Mr. Alhindawi has been team leader at a World Bank-funded programme to the League of Arab States on Institutional Development to Strengthen Arab Policy and Participation. Before that, he was the youth policy advisor to the Arab League in Cairo. Alhindawi holds a Bachelor of Computer Science degree and a master\u2019s in European Relations. <\/p>\n
\u201cMr. Alhindawi is a strong youth advocate and brings to this position extensive knowledge of and commitment to working on youth issues at the local, regional and international level,\u201d said the UN spokesperson.<\/p>\n
