S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 The countries of North Africa did not grow enough to face their social and economic challenges, like the reduction of unemployment and the opening of posts for youths. The countries of North Africa \u2013 Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Sudan and Tunisia \u2013 grew on average 4% over the last decade. In the same period, countries in Eastern Asia and the Pacific grew 8.5% and those in Asia, 6.5%, says the study. <\/p>\n
One of the routes to solve the problem, according to the ECA, is diversification and improvement of exports, with the sale of higher value added products. Exports of the region continue majorly focussed on raw materials, whose prices are unstable on the international market, says the report.<\/p>\n
Up to Thursday (1) in Rabat, Morocco, the 28th Session of the Inter-ministerial Committee of Experts from North Africa, with representatives of public administration, organisation, private sector companies, the civil society and specialists. Diversification of foreign sales and shipments of higher value-added products is one of the themes discussed as a way for structural transformation of the economies of the region. According to the director of the ECA\u2019s regional office, Karima Bounema Ben Soultane, who opened the event, 2012 was marked by recovery from the impact of the political crises of 2011, with estimated average growth of 2.3% after a 0.1% recession in the previous year. The minister of Economy and Finance of Morocco, Nizar Baraka, also said that the current model of growth in the region is not sustainable, as it is based on exports of natural resources.<\/p>\n
