São Paulo – The Arab Culture Institute (Icarabe) is going to promote course “Orientalismo e seus reflexos no presente: como o mundo aprendeu a olhar para os árabes” (Orientalism and its reflexes in the present: how the world has learnt to eye the Arabs) from May 21st, at the Arab Chamber Space, at the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, in the city of São Paulo. The course will have six lessons, one a week, in the evening, from7:30 pm to 10:00 pm, and general coordination is by Heloisa Abreu Dib Julien. <\/p>\n
The objective is to present the main notions of what Orientalism is and practical examples of how it may be found in Arab and Muslim representations in the press, cinema, traveller reports, literature and arts. The thesis of Orientalism was created by Palestinian intellectual Edward Said and covers discourse that puts the Eastern world at a lower level than the Western. <\/p>\n
The classes should take place on May 21st and 28th and June 5th, 11th, 18th and 25th. Enrolment is R$ 300 for the public as a whole and R$ 230 for Icarabe members, students and pensioners. <\/p>\n
