According to Chediek, the Brazilian government’s policies for the new middle class will influence the United Nations (UN).

“We have seen that social and economic policies will enable Brazil to eliminate extreme poverty by 100%., and the UN has taken on a commitment to fight poverty. We pay a lot of attention to that, but not enough attention to the ‘point of arrival’ of the fight against poverty, which is the middle class. It is quite appropriate that Brazil should be paying attention to that point of arrival,” said the UNDP delegate.

The SAE minister and president of the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea), Marcelo Neri said “the end of poverty is only the beginning.” According to him, inequality has seen a “spectacular decline,” as the Gini index dropped from 0.64 to 0.54 in the past years. The index, in which zero represents total income equality, is commonly used in socioeconomic comparisons between countries.

“In 2012, despite the low GDP growth rate, 35% of the population has risen in the social scale, while 14% have moved downward. This shows the country is seeing more prosperity and opportunity, and less inequality,” said Neri, after saying the labour card is the main symbol of the middle class.

To Chediek, the figures in the study are “impressive.” He believes the formalization of employment has been crucial to the good results. “What has caused the country’s situation to improve the most was job creation. This is another reason why getting to know the middle class is of utmost importance,” he said. “President Dilma Rousseff said she wants to make Brazil into a middle-class country. We want to have an influence on politics and expand that until the entire world has become a middle-class world.”

The paper Voices of the New Middle Class shows the contribution of entrepreneurs to the expansion of Brazil’s new middle class. One of its highlights is increased formalization of jobs. According to the paper, 40% of all job positions available were created by small businesses.

Out of 15 million new jobs created from 2001 to 2011, 6 million originated from small businesses, and 95% were formal jobs. Still according to the paper, 39% of all wages in Brazil are related to small businesses – over R$ 500 billion a year.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

So said United Nations Development Programme delegate Jorge Chediek, following the release of a study on the new Brazilian middle class.

[91

0":"post-44622","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-economy
So said United Nations Development Programme delegate Jorge Chediek, following the release of a study on the new Brazilian middle class.
["GET
