The funds will be invested in public services, energy, sanitation, social security and education in Palestine.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our program with the Palestinian people is designed to support the sustainable development of both the private and public sectors,&rdquo; said the World Bank&rsquo;s director for the West Bank and Gaza, Mariam Sherman, according to a press release. &ldquo;Good governance and transparency are key elements in building the Palestinian institutions of state. In parallel, to really drive growth, the energy of private sector has to be unleashed and this means building confidence and removing restrictions to the free flow of commercial activity,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Bank has also approved a US$ 40 million policy development loan to support the the Palestinian National Authority&rsquo;s Palestinian National Development Plan. This is the fifth instalment in a total loan of US$ 160 million for public sector governance and transparency reforms. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Palestinian Authority has made significant progress in managing its fiscal position, controlling public sector wage bill growth, building a modern public procurement system and rationalizing social assistance,&rdquo; said World Bank senior economist Orhan Niksic. &ldquo;It is extremely important that the international community continue working closely with them to support further policy reforms with both resources and knowledge,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Another US$ 10 million will be allotted to a Municipal Development Project designed to improve local management and transparency, in line with the national plan&rsquo;s goals of fiscal decentralization and community participation. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Supporting reform in local government is central to improving the living conditions of Palestinians. The municipal level plays a crucial role in service delivery,&rdquo; said the Bank&rsquo;s senior urban specialist Soraya Goga. <\/p>\n<p>According to the press release, since 1994 the institution has allocated US$ 805 million of its own resources to the development of Palestine. It has also administered nearly US$ 1 billion from other donors since 2008.
