This time, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth estimate has been lowered from2.98% to 2.93%, based on a poll conducted by the Brazilian Central Bank. The poll is conducted on a weekly basis and released on Mondays. This is the second consecutive downward revision. The GDP growth projection for 2014 has remained at 3.5% for 11 weeks now. <\/p>\n
On May 21, Central Bank governor Alexandre Tombini said the new cycle of increase in the benchmark interest rate (Selic), designed to curb inflation, will not interfere with economic growth in 2013. “What the Central Bank is doing is compatible with the gradual recovery of our economy. Counter-inflationary measures boost confidence on the economy, all the while protecting workers’ incomes,” he said. <\/p>\n
Financial analysts’ industrial output growth estimate is down from 2.50% to 2.43% this year and from 3.50% to 3.10% in 2014.
