Rio de Janeiro – This Monday (10th), the Brazilian Navy has sent a frigate with a crew of 242 military personnel to integrate the maritime fleet of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil). The frigate União will replace Constituição, which has led the taskforce since January this year. <\/p>\n
In addition to training Lebanese Navy soldiers, the Brazilian troops will aid the local government in preventing illegal weapons from being smuggled into the South of the country. The ship left the Rio de Janeiro Naval Base at 11:00 am this Monday and should arrive in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, on July 11th. <\/p>\n
Brazil has led the Unifil taskforce since late 2011, and the frigate União was the first Brazilian ship to take part in the mission. In the first operation, the ship remained on the Lebanese coast from October 2011 to July 2012. <\/p>\n
According to frigate captain Gustavo Calero Garriga, the Brazilian ship leads a group of nine ships that performs missions in the region. The group includes three ships from Germany, two from Bangladesh, one from Greece, one from Indonesia, and one from Turkey.<\/p>\n

“We are aware that traditionally speaking, it is a conflict-ridden region, but our men have reported no major occurrences during our time there. We have full support from the Lebanese authorities, and we will proceed with our missions to ensure peace and safety in the country,” said Garriga.<\/p>\n
Upon bidding farewell to her son, the 26 year-old sailor Guilherme Araújo, the retired woman Regina Neto wept in apprehension because the finds the trip to be risky. “While I take pride in him for helping people in need on the other side of the world, I have fear in my heart. I hope that everything will well and that he will get back to his family again.” <\/p>\n
According to the Brazilian Navy, historically speaking, Lebanon struggles with illegal weapon smuggling by pirate ships on the Mediterranean Sea. The peace mission in Lebanon was established by the United Nations (UN) in 1978 and counts on the participation of 35 countries, including Brazil, which has sent 12,000 military and police officers since 2011.<\/p>\n
