According to information disclosed on Monday (15) by the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, the balance was US$ 619 million negative in the period from July 8 to 14, as a result of exports of US$ 4.24 billion and imports of US$ 4.859 billion.

In the daily average of shipments, according to the Ministry, foreign sales dropped 11.6% in the second week of the month as against the first. There was a reduction in exports of partly manufactured products, like iron and steel products, aluminium alloys, sugar in bulk and rubber; in basic products, like crude oil, soy chaff, wheat and coffee; and in manufactured products, like aircraft, ethanol, fuel oils, electric engines and generators, and land-levelling machinery.

The Ministry pointed out that the flow of exports was influenced by the holiday last week on Tuesday, July 9th, in the state of São Paulo, and by protests by stevedores who barred access to Santos Port, on the coast of São Paulo. Workers protested against the new hiring regulations for private terminals, established in the new Port Law.

The ministry informs that the daily average of shipments in the port dropped 29.5% from the first to the second week of the month. São Paulo is the main exporter state in Brazil and the Port of Santos is the busiest in the country. The focus of protests was the Embraport terminal, which belongs to the Brazilian Odebrecht and DP World, from Dubai, and which has just started operating.

The holiday and the stops, however, seem not to have resulted in hardships for imports, which grew 5.7% in daily average from the first to the second week. The growth was influenced by fuel and lubricant purchases, vehicles and parts, fertilizers, plastics, grain and grinding products.

In the total for two weeks, exports are at US$ 9.034 billion. In the daily average, there was a reduction of 5.4% over July last year. In comparison with the average for June 2013, there was 14.5% retraction.

Imports, in turn, totalled US$ 9.455 billion, growth of 14.7% over July 2012 and 0.4% over June this year, in the daily average.

*Translated by Mark Ament

Press Release/Codesp

The difference between exports and imports was US$ 619 million negative last week, after being US$ 198 million positive in the previous week.

[91

0":"post-45297","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-economy
The difference between exports and imports was US$ 619 million negative last week, after being US$ 198 million positive in the previous week.
["GET
