São Paulo – This Tuesday (6th) in Belo Horizonte, the Brazilian minister of Agriculture, Antônio Andrade, signed a normative instruction altering the rules for manufacturing and sales of artisanal cheese in the state of Minas Gerais. From now on, the product will be allowed to be sold outside the state of Minas Gerais and the maturation stage is no longer required to last a minimum of 60 days. Cheese matured over shorter periods will be allowed to be sold, provided that technical-scientific studies prove that the reduced period does not compromise product quality. <\/p>\n
According to a communiqué from the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, the minister Fernando Pimentel, who attended the signing of the norm, has said Minas cheese makers can prepare to seek new markets, especially outside Brazil. “In addition to meeting domestic demand, we will be able to seek out markets (for artisanal cheese) anywhere in the world, increasing productivity and improving living conditions for Minas Gerais state cheese makers,” said the minister during the norm’s signing.<\/p>\n
According to the Development Ministry, there are 9,400 artisanal cheese makers in Minas Gerais, in five different geographical areas (Serro, Campo das Vertentes, Canastra, Araxá and Cerrado). Prior to the signing of the normative instruction, they were only allowed to sell the product in the state of Minas Gerais. Artisanal cheese production in the state creates 28,800 direct jobs.<\/p>\n
The Agriculture Ministry’s instruction also sets forth the adoption of hygiene standards for milk production, cheese making and product transportation. Companies willing to export will be required to meet sanitary demands from the target countries.<\/p>\n
