According to the organization, the images show that Islamic refugees observe religious traditions even when they are far from their native countries.

Ramadan is a month in the Muslim calendar when devotees go on a fast from sunup to sundown, and then have communal meals, celebration, and charity actions in the evening. This year, the Ramadan began on July 9th and will continue until next Thursday (8th), when Eid Al-Fitr, i.e. the holiday that marks the end of the fasting period will begin. The month’s start and end dates may vary in certain countries, because they depend on the visual observation of the moon’s phases by religious scholars.

According to the Unhcr, in Brazil, Muslim refugees have met with local Islamic communities for the celebrations. The UN agency accompanied devotees at the Pari Mosque, in downtown São Paulo, and at the Reception Centre for Refugees of the Cáritas Arquidiocesana de São Paulo, where they used part of the offices to pray.

The images can be seen on Flickr (http://goo.gl/q5b1wo) and on Facebook (http://goo.gl/iBTksl).

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

[91

0":"post-45519","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-economy
["GET
