São Paulo – The government of Brazil condemned “the brutality of repression in Egypt” in a press statement disclosed by the Brazilian Foreign Office (Itamaraty) on Wednesday (14). Under the pretext of liberating areas of Cairo that have been occupied for weeks by partisans of the deposed Mohamed Morsi, the police repressed the protests with violence. The resulting conflicts caused over 500 deaths in several parts of the country. The figures were calculated by the Egyptian acting government itself.<\/p>\n
To the Itamaraty, “the scaling of violence and repression to the protesters in Egypt represents a serious degradation of the safety situation in a country that is key to stability in the region.” Morsi was deposed by a military coup in July, when he was completing his first year in office. A member of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamic political party, he was the first democratically elected president in the country.<\/p>\n
Brazil, according to the press statement, “calls for dialogue and for reconciliation for the fair aspirations of the population for freedom, democracy and prosperity, expressed in the Revolution of January 25th, may be reached without violence, with respect to human rights and with the return to full vigilance of democratic order.” The revolution of January 25th, 2011, was the popular protests that brought down the almost 30 years of the Hosni Mubarak regime.<\/p>\n
Itamaraty informed also that the embassy of Brasil in Cairo “is aware of the situation of the Brazilian community in Egypt and warns to the lack of safety in the country.”<\/p>\n
