The city has been selected by the International Coffee Organization (ICO) to host the 50th anniversary meeting, during which policies and production trends for the next few years will be discussed. <\/p>\n<p>According to information released this Friday (16th) by the Ministry of Agriculture, delegates from over 70 countries should attend the meeting, which will take place alongside the 8th Espa&ccedil;o Brasil Caf&eacute; (Brazil Coffee Space). The event promotes deals among growers, roasting professionals, cooperatives, and retailers, and also includes seminars, tasting sessions and product launches. <\/p>\n<p>At the meeting, the ICO will discuss risk management and insurance for coffee, in particular hedging at terminal markets. On September 10th, delegates from the participating countries will discuss more effective ways to obtain financing and manage risk.<\/p>\n<p>According to a communiqu&eacute; from the Ministry of Agriculture, the meeting in Belo Horizonte will be a rare instance of an ICO-promoted event outside of its London headquarters. The participating countries account for 97% of the world&rsquo;s coffee output, and 80% of the commodity&rsquo;s consumption.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leading grower and exporter <\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>In 2012, Brazil produced 50.8 million bags of coffee and was the leading producing of the grain in the world, according to ICO data. Vietnam produced 22 million bags, Indonesia produced 12.7 million bags, and Colombia produced 9.5 million. Each bag contains 60 kilograms of non-roasted coffee. Brazil was also the leading exporter of the product in 2012. The country shipped out 28.7 million bags, equivalent to 27.2% of total global flows.<\/p>\n<p>Minas Gerais is the leading producing state in Brazil. According to data from the National Supply Company (Conab), the state produced 26.9 million bags in 2012, i.e. 52% of the country&rsquo;s total output. The main producing areas in the states are the South of Minas, Mata de Minas, Cerrado Mineiro and Chapada de Minas.
