São Paulo – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Unhcr) has informed this Tuesday that the number of Syrian refugees has exceeded 2 million. The civil conflict in Syria has lasted two and a half years now. According to the Unhcr, 1.8 million people have fled the country in only 12 months. <\/p>\n
The UN agency reported that 97% of the refugees are sheltered in neighbouring countries, which require international aid to cater to these people. “The only solace is the humanity shown by the neighbouring countries in welcoming and saving the lives of so many refugees,” said the UN high commissioner for refugees António Guterres, according to a press release.<\/p>\n
The Unhcr added that ministers from Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey will meet with the agency this Wednesday (4th) in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss increasing international aid to the refugees. The country which has seen the strongest influx of Syrians fleeing the conflict is Lebanon, followed by Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt. According to the organization, 52% of the refugees are under 17 years of age.<\/p>\n
Within Syria, according to the Unhcr, 4.25 million people have been internally displaced due to the conflict. The organization also notes that humanitarian agencies possess only 47% of the funds required in order to cater to the refugees. <\/p>\n
