Of these, US$ 2.045 billion concern the trade deficit during the period (i.e. exchange operations pertaining to trade) and US$ 96 million concern a deficit in financial operations (i.e. remittance of profits to foreign countries and foreign direct investment, among other operations).

From January through the first week of September, the flow of trade ran a US$ 12.845 billion surplus. Financial operations ran a US$ 12.748 billion deficit. There is still a surplus of US$ 97 million. However, in the same period last year, over US$ 23 billion had entered Brazil.

Dollar outflow from Brazil has increased since the United States’ Central Bank, aka Fed, announced that it will withdraw stimuli to the country’s economy, which leads to less dollars on the market. One of the consequences of dollars exiting Brazil and the Fed’s announcement was an increase in the price of US currency in Brazil.

In May this year, the dollar was selling for approximately R$ 2.00. The currency appreciated and by late August it was selling for R$ 2.38. After the Brazilian Central Bank announced that it would hold daily dollar auctions and implemented measures to increase the amount of the currency in Brazil, the dollar dropped, but last Tuesday (10th) it hiked again. By 2:25 pm this Wednesday, the currency was up 0311% and was selling for R$ 2.289.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

Such was the forex flow deficit in the first week of the month alone.
