The event is the world’s third largest, after the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, and takes place every five years. Delegates from the International Exhibition Bureau (IEB), in charge of selecting the host city in November this year, were welcomed by government officials, including city mayor Fernando Haddad, Brazil’s Tourism minister Gastão Vieira, and vice president Michel Temer.

According to Temer, the federal government will provide financial backing to the city hall, if need be, for the event to be held. He said he is confident in the victory of the city, which is competing against Izmir, in Turkey, Yekaterinburg, in Russia, and Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. "We stand a strong chance, we have already had some extraordinary victories, like the World Cup and the Olympics,” he said.

Haddad said the Convention Centre that should be built in order to host the exhibition will give rise to a job- and employment -generating hub in Pirituba, the São Paulo neighbourhood it will be located in. Another advantage, said the mayor, is the fact that it will further cement the city’s vocation as a business tourism destination. “The convention centre will be three times larger than the Anhembi Exhibition Centre, so we can continue to host the trade shows, conventions, seminars, and congresses which already take place in São Paulo,” he said.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

The city mayor, Brazil’s vice president and the Tourism minister welcomed delegates of the International Exhibition Bureau.

[91

0":"post-45928","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-economy
The city mayor, Brazil’s vice president and the Tourism minister welcomed delegates of the International Exhibition Bureau.
["GET
