According to figures released last Wednesday (25th) by the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, the United Arab Emirates were the third leading importer of cooperative-made products this year at US$ 351.1 million, up 66.6% from the same period in 2012. Exports to the country accounted for 8.4% of total exports by Brazilian cooperatives. <\/p>\n<p>Among the 25 leading importing countries of Brazilian cooperatives, there are four other Arab countries. Saudi Arabia was the 7th leading importing country. Year-to-date through <br \/>August, Saudi Arabia imported the equivalent of US$ 167.1 million (4% of total imports); Algeria imported US$ 83.2 million (2%); Egypt imported US$ 63.9 million (1.5%); and Yemen, the 19th leading importer, purchased US$ 56 million worth of Brazilian-made products, i.e. 1.3% of total cooperatives&rsquo; sales. Brazilian cooperatives&rsquo; exports to Yemen saw the most increase year-to-date in 2013 from 2012. According to the ministry, the country imported 224% more this year than in the last. <\/p>\n<p>According to the ministry, China was the leading importer of Brazilian cooperatives&rsquo; products in 2013, at US$ 607.6 million year-to-date, equivalent to 14.5% of total exports from Brazil. The United States rank second at US$ 465.7 million, i.e. 11.1% of the total. Of the five leading importing countries for Brazilian cooperatives, the Netherlands ranked fourth at US$ 263.1 million (6.3% of total exports). Germany ranked fifth at US$ 231.9 million (5.5%).<\/p>\n<p>In August only, cooperatives&rsquo; exports amounted to US$ 508.1 million, up 0.77% from August 2012 and down 8.76% from July 2013.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Products and states <\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>Year-to-date through August, exports of refined sugar, the main export product of Brazilian cooperatives, amounted to a combined US$ 783.9 million, equivalent to 18.6% of total exports. Sales of the second most exported item, soya bean, stood at US$ 542 million, followed by poultry (US$ 496.2 million), soya bran (US$ 468.5 million), coffee bean (US$ 437.6 million) and ethanol (389.4 million).<\/p>\n<p>S&atilde;o Paulo was the leading exporting state, having shipped out the equivalent of US$ 1.44 billion. Paran&aacute;, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso do Sul were the top exporting states year-to-date through August for cooperatives.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Brazilian ministry, Brazilian cooperatives&rsquo; imports were also up year-to-date. By August, cooperatives had imported a combined US$ 275 million, up 23% from the same period last year.
