São Paulo – The governor of the state of Santa Catarina is interested in Arab investment in state ports. In a mission promoted last month by the governor of the state of Santa Catarina, Raimundo Colombo, to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, executives from port operator DP World showed interest in investing in Santa Catarina, according to information disclosed by a spokesperson.<\/p>\n
Colombo met with the government relations director at DP World, Buti Al Jumairi, and with commercial director Esam Ahmed. He presented to the group a diagnosis of the five ports of Santa Catarina, the private Itapoã and Navegantes, the municipal Itajaí, the state-owned São Francisco do Sul and Imbituba, which are currently being managed by the government, and fishing port Laguna.<\/p>\n
“They are interested, and are already studying the construction of a port, still in the preliminary phase, and are evaluating partnerships with others, like Imbituba,” said the governor, at the time of the trip, according to a press statement disclosed on the state government’s site. Colombo pointed out that investment in ports is among the fundamental vectors for development of Brazil and Santa Catarina.<\/p>\n
DP World already operates in Brazil. Since June this year, the company has been operating the Embraport terminal, a joint venture with the Brazilian Odebrecht. The company is present in several parts of the world, from Asia-Pacific to the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. In the first half of this year, the company had a turnover of 26.6 million TEUs (Twenty foot Equivalent Units).<\/p>\n
Apart from Dubai, the Santa Catarina state government delegation also visited China, where it met with managers of company Sinotruk, in Beijing. The Chinese company should build a lorry factory in the state of Santa Catarina.<\/p>\n
