A resolution issued by the Foreign Trade Chamber (Camex) and published on the Official Gazette this Wednesday (30th) authorizes the purchase of an additional 600,000 tonnes of the grain to be imported without the levying of the 10% Import Tax up until November 30th this year.

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, the import quota has been raised due to scarcity of wheat on the Brazilian and Argentinean markets. Climate-related issues have caused farmers in both countries to incur crop losses this year.

In April this year, the Camex had lifted the import tax for the purchase of 1 million tonnes. However, the deadline has been extended and the quota, raised several times, due to wheat crop failures in different Mercosur countries. The issued today has raised the amount of tax-free wheat imports to 3.3 million tonnes this year.

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, Camex will keep monitoring the wheat market and its effects on the economy to consider future increases in the quota. The organization, however, has informed that it also works for the best interest of Brazilian farmers.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

Brazil may buy 600 tonnes of wheat free of tax from foreign countries, according to a Foreign Trade Chamber resolution issued this Wednesday (30th).
