The first MoU will be signed this Tuesday (5th) with the Secretariat for Energy of the State of São Paulo. The second one will be signed this week, in Brasília, with Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy.

This morning, Eljazz paid a visit to the offices of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, in São Paulo, alongside the Sudanese ambassador in Brasília, Abd Elghani Elnaim Awad Elkarim, and a delegation of government officials and business delegates from his country. The delegation was welcomed by the CEO Michel Alaby, by Ramez Goussous, advisor to the Board of International institutional Relations, and by the director Daniel Hannun.

In an interview to ANBA, Eljazz said the agreement with the São Paulo state government is the outcome of a meeting held on Monday (4th) with the secretary for Energy, José Aníbal.

“We all have agreed that there is a lot in common between Sudan and Brazil. Sudan is resource-rich in energy, oil, and gas. The country is also working hard on its sugar industry. Thus, we have made a point of starting to do business together,” the minister stated.

The memorandum will remain in effect until the end of 2016 and provides that the two governments will cooperate in renewable energy; technical and technology-oriented training sugar and ethanol; cogeneration of energy and air conditioning using natural gas; biofuel, biogas and bioelectricity technologies; onshore natural gas production and exploration; and gas distribution. The MoU also covers experience exchange and mutual technical visits.

“We are signing this memorandum of understanding whereby both parties will work and reap the results. It will pave the way for Sudan and Brazil to cooperate in several energy sectors,” Eljazz said.

This Tuesday, Eljazz and the Sudanese delegation will fly to Brasília. Apart from signing a similar agreement with the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy, they will attend a meeting with a local bank. On Thursday, the mission will head to Rio de Janeiro, to sit meetings with delegates from the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), the oil company Petrobrás, and other oil and gas industry companies.

BTG Pactual

During their visit to the Arab Brazilian Chamber headquarters, the Sudanese delegation met with representatives from the investment bank BTG Pactual. At the meeting, the Sudanese discussed their energy, sugar and banking sectors, and called on Brazilian businessmen to visit their country.

“The bank already enjoys a significant presence in Africa through our stake in a joint venture with Petrobras. We were interested in hearing about existing opportunities and investment potential in Sudan, both in oil and gas and other areas, like ethanol and finances. We were quite impressed with what we saw, and now we need to ponder,” said Vittorio Perona, the partner in charge of Oil and Gas at the bank.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

Aurea Santos/ANBA

The Sudanese oil minister Awad Ahmed Eljazz is in the country and will sign memorandums with the Secretariat for Energy of São Paulo and with the Mines and Energy Ministry.
