According to the director general at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde, who visited the Gulf last Sunday (10), the main measure to be adopted by Kuwait in coming months is the containing of spending.

In a press statement disclosed after her meeting with local authorities in the country capital, Kuwait City, Lagarde stated that despite the country recording a trade surplus and having conditions to support crises, it is necessary to progress in administration of the economy.

“Spending rigidities and a growing reliance on oil revenues have increased fiscal risks, notwithstanding the current high fiscal surplus and large buffers. To contain these risks from eroding buffers and to save for future generations, it is important to contain current expenditures such as the public sector wage bill and generalized subsidies, and find ways to enhance non-oil revenues,” said Lagarde in a statement.

During her visit to the country, the main executive at the IMF met with the emir of Kuwait, Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, with whom she discussed the economic and political situation of some Arab countries, Kuwait and also the global economy. She also met with the minister of Finance and with the governor of the country’s Central Bank, as well as visiting the IMF’s Economy and Finance Centre in the Middle East, in Kuwait City.

*Translated by Mark Ament

The managing director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) made the recommendation to local authorities during her visit to the country.

[91

0":"post-46417","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-economy
The managing director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) made the recommendation to local authorities during her visit to the country.
["GET
