The country will hold the position formerly retained by Saudi Arabia, which has renounced the post.

According to the Jordanian news agency Petra, Jordan was elected with votes from 178 countries out of a total of 183. All Arab and Asian countries voted for Jordan. The Jordanian minister of foreign affairs, Nasser Judeh, has said in a communiqué that Jordan’s election is a historical moment for the Arab country.

The minister added that Jordan is committed to supporting Arab, Islamic and international causes, especially the Palestinian issue, which Jordan considers a national interest affair.

Saudi diplomacy has given up the post because it believes the Security Council has failed in its attempts to end the conflict in Syria and in peace talks between Israel and Palestine.

On the occasion when Saudi Arabia rejected of the seat, four other countries were chosen to occupy non-permanent seat: Chad, Nigeria, Lithuania and Chile, which, like Jordan, will assume their posts on January 1st. The five permanent members of the Security Council which have veto powers on the resolutions of others are United States, Russia, China, United Kingdom and France. Jordan has participated in the Council on two other occasions, in 1964-1965 and in 1982-1983.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

The Arab country will replace Saudi Arabia and will occupy a seat at the Security Council for the next two years, beginning on January 1st, 2014.

[106

0":"post-46645","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-foreign-affairs
The Arab country will replace Saudi Arabia and will occupy a seat at the Security Council for the next two years, beginning on January 1st, 2014.
["GET
