São Paulo – The Food Price Index calculated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in December reached 206.7 points, remaining “nearly unchanged” in relation to the 206.4 points in November last year, according to the communiqué released by the institution this Thursday (09). The index registered sharp increases in dairy products and meat and a considerable decline in sugar and cereal prices.<\/p>\n
According to FAO, dairy products registered high prices throughout the entire year of 2013. In December, the dairy products registered 264.4 points, 13.2 points higher than in November. During the year, the average was 243 points. The reason for the price increase, according to the agency, was the great Chinese demand for powder milk and because manufacturers favor the production of powder milk instead of cheese and butter. The beef price index reached 188.1 points, just over that registered in November, due to the strong demand from China and Japan. <\/p>\n
The general price index remained stable, however, because sugar and cereal prices went down, with the exception of rice, according to the agency’s announcement. The cereals index reached 191.5 points in December, 2.8 points below that registered in November duet to record harvests obtained in 2013. The good sugar harvest in Brazil helped lower the FAO price index and also the general result. The index reached 234.9 points, a decrease by 15.8 points in relation to November. In average, according to the UN agency, 2013 registered the lowest price index average in the last three years. In 2011, the index showed 230.1 points. In 2012, the rate dropped to 213.4 points and in 2013 to 209.9 points.
