According to the Brazilian Association of Shoe Manufacturers (Abicalçados), the Arab country’s imports increased by 12% in revenue and 13.4% in volume in relation to the previous year, to US$ 16.7 million and 1.2 million pairs, respectively. The UAE reached the 17th position in the list of countries that most imported shoes from Brazil in 2013, and is the first among Arab countries.

This increase means that the Emirates has gained weight as destination of Brazilian shoe exports. The country in the Middle east now represents 1.5% of the revenue Brazil obtains with these sales, and 1.1% of the volume shipped. In 2012, the Emirates accounted for 1.4% of revenues and 1% of shipments. The average shoe price purchased by the Arab nation, however, has declined by 1.3%, from US$ 13.07 to US$ 12.91.

As well as the UAE, there is another Arab country which is part of the top 20 list of Brazilian shoe importers: Saudi Arabia. The Saudis, however, reduced their purchases last year. They are Brazil’s 19th shoe market abroad, but imports fell by 23% in revenue and 7.8% in volume. The country spent US$ 15.4 million to import 1.6 million pairs of shoes. The average shoe price declined a lot, by 16.5%, to US$ 9.26.

Of the top 20 importers list, the Emirates were among the 12 markets which increased their imports of the Brazilian product, whereas the Saudis were part of the group of eight nations which reduced their purchases. Alongside the latter were also the United States, Argentina and France, the three greatest markets for Brazilian shoes abroad. Among the nations which increased their purchases are Paraguay, Angola, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Russia and Australia.

In general, there was only a slight increase in exports in the sector in 2013, by 0.2%, in relation to 2012. This represents sales of US$ 1.095 billion, against US$ 1.092 billion in the previous year. The quantity exported, however, increased somewhat more, by 8.5%, and the country shipped a total of 122.9 million pairs of shoes. With this the average shoe price was 7.6% less than in 2012, reaching US$ 8.91 in 2013, against US$ 9.65 in the previous year.

*Translated by Silvia Lindsey

Malu Calçados

The country increased Brazilian shoes purchases by 12% last year.
