The study, a joint effort by the OECD, the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Inter-American Center of Tax Administrations (CIAT), shows that tax collection in the region is increasing, but it’s share of the GDP is still lower than the average in the OECD economies.

The research, which included 18 countries, reveals that the average tax load in 2008 corresponded to 19.5% of the GDP, dropped to 18.9% in 2009, and then continuously increased to 20.7% in 2012. According to the study, the tax load has been increasing significantly in the last two decades. In 1990, the tax administration’s share of the Latin American GDP was of 13.9%.

The OECD average is 34.6%. Although the Latin American average is below this mark, two of the main economies in the region show a tax load above it: Argentina, with 37.7%, and Brazil, with 36.3%. On the other end, the two Latin American countries with the lowest ratio between taxes and GDP are Guatemala (12.3%) and Dominican Republic (13.5%). Among the OECD nations, the highest tax load is supported by Denmark (48%) and the lowest is Mexico (19.6%).

The OECD represents 34 of the main developed and emerging economies in the world. Brazil and Argentina, however, are not members. From Latin America, only Mexico and Chile are part of the group.

Region average, however, is lower than the OECD, with the exception of Argentina and Brazil, which are above average.

[91

0":"post-46967","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-economy
Region average, however, is lower than the OECD, with the exception of Argentina and Brazil, which are above average.
["GET
