São Paulo – From this Saturday on (29th) the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) will have a new commissioner-general. The Swiss Pierre Krähenbühl will take the position that once belonged to Filippo Grandi, who joined the Unrwa in 2005 and has run the agency for the last four years.<\/p>\n
In 2013, Grandi organized, in a partnership with the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce<\/strong>, a donation campaign to help Palestinian refugees which raised US$ 54,000. On the occasion, he claimed that the donation had a value of “solidarity to the refugees” who feel “forgotten and marginalised”. The money would be used on the purchase of ultrasonography equipment and the treatment of diseases such as cancer and diabetes.<\/p>\n According to information released by Unrwa this Friday (28th), Grandi led a root-and-branch reform initiative of UNRWA which saw the Agency streamline and simplify its management systems and improve service delivery to a population of refugees now numbering some 5 million. UNRWA was established in 1949 by the United Nations General Assembly and provides assistance to refugees in Gaza Strip and West Bank, in these two occupied territories, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon.<\/p>\n Krähenbühl was nominated for Grandi’s position in the end of 2013, by the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon.
