The product is registered under Mercosur Common Nomenclature (MCN) 03035300, and is imported from Arab countries to Brazil. From January through March this year, the country imported 9,500 tonnes of frozen sardine from Morocco and Oman, amounting to US$ 10.1 million, as per the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade.

Last year, Brazil imported 40,600 tonnes of frozen sardine from the Arab market, or US$ 37.8 million; in 2012, imports amounted to 26,000 tonnes, or US$ 24.7 million. In the last two years and in Q1 this year, the product originated from Morocco and Oman. From January through March, Morocco supplied 7,800 tonnes, equivalent to US$ 9 million. In 2013 and 2012, the bulk of frozen sardine shipped from Arab countries to Brazil also came from Morocco.

The tax break was announced last Tuesday (29th) by the Foreign Trade Chamber (Camex), which is linked to the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, on the Official Gazette. According to the Camex, the measure is designed to ensure supplies of frozen sardine during the no-fishing season in Brazil, a period when fish breed. The lowered tariff will become effective as of Thursday (1st).

The Camex has also lowered the import tax on caprolactam, an industry input used in nylon manufacturing. The rate is down from 12% to 2% for a 180-day period beginning on May 1st, up to a quota of 16,000 tonnes. The measure was adopted due to domestic undersupply, according to information from the ministry’s website. The product has not been imported from Arab countries to Brazil in the past few years. The last purchase took place in 2010 and amounted to 78 tonnes, worth US$ 211,000.

The import taxes on 371 types of machinery and equipment not made in Brazil have also been reduced. These include 315 new tax breaks and 56 renewals of existing ones, and apply to capital goods, computing and telecom products. The tax on computing and telecom goods is down from 16% to 2% up until the end of 2015. The tax on most of the capital goods involved is down from 14% to 2% for the same period. The goal is to enable cost reduction so Brazilian companies can implement or expand plants and production lines.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

Press Release

Brazil’s Foreign Trade Chamber has reduced the import tariff on frozen sardine from 10% to 2%, for a quota of 23,000 tonnes until September 30th.
