The exhibition celebrates the International Recycling Day (May 17th) and wants to promote the reusing of materials in the Arab country.

“Lebanon is a country which recycles little of its trash. We want to promote it because we feel the date is important”, explains Samia Yakzan, director of the centre. “We would like to make [the population] aware, that is why we will also offer a workshop for children, to show the importance of recycling”, she points out.

The exhibition will bring fashion and decorative items, such as purses, accessories, ornaments, vases and beanbags made by the artists Katia Awar and Sandra Fernandez, respectively Brazilian and Spanish. “We are going to exhibit and invite people linked to the fashion world so the products may be commercialized later”, says Yakzan.

The centre’s director says that Awar is a specialist in recycling. Among her accomplishments is the delivery of a workshop on the topic for Lebanese children, coordinated by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) and the Maritime Task Force commanded by Brazil in the Arab country. Fernandez used to be a Spanish teacher and now devotes her time to works with recycled materials.

The exhibition will have around 50 pieces and, on the opening day, the documentary Waste Land, by the Brazilian artist Vik Muniz, will be shown. The film features waste pickers in the Jardim Gramacho landfill, in Rio de Janeiro, and shows it is possible to produce art with the litter found there.

Service
Recycle into Art
From May 15th to 22nd
Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Centre
Opening day: May15th, at 6pm
Visiting hours: from Monday to Friday, 10 am to 8pm
Address: Mar Mitr street, Trad building, 176, Achrafieh – Beirut
Free entrance
The workshop for children will be on the 16th, at 4.30pm

*Translated by Rodrigo Mendonça

Vik Muniz

The exhibition ‘Recycle into Art’ is held in the cultural centre, in Beirut, from May 15th to 22nd.
