The survey points out that sector revenues increased by 0.5% during the same period. Year-to-date through March, sales were up 4.5%.<\/p>\n<p>The sectors whose sales dropped the most, influencing overall retail performance, include hypermarkets, supermarkets, foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco, down 1% in March from February; fuels and lubricants, down 1.5%, building material (-3.1%); equipment and material for offices, computing and communications (-4.5%). On the other hand, sales increased for furniture and home appliances (up 1.5%); books, magazines, newspapers and stationery (1.2%); and pharmaceutical, medical and orthopaedic products, perfumery and cosmetics (0.5%).<\/p>\n<p>March-on-March, retail sales volume was down 1.1%. According to a press release from IBGE, the population&rsquo;s purchasing power remains &ldquo;positive,&rdquo; although the calendar effect has influenced sales volume. In 2013, Easter was celebrated in May.
