São Paulo – Brazil’s state-owned aircraft manufacturing company Embraer and the federal government have signed this Tuesday (20th), in Gavião Peixoto, São Paulo, a contract for the purchase, by the government, of 28 units of the KC-390 military transport aircraft. The deal, according to a press release from Embraer, is worth R$ 7.2 billion (US$ 3.2 billion) and provides for the delivery of the units from 2016 to 2026, plus maintenance and parts supplies.<\/p>\n

The agreement was signed by Embraer and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB, in the Portuguese acronym) command during the inauguration of a hangar that will house the aircraft’s assembly line. The ceremony was attended by president Dilma Rousseff, the São Paulo state governor Geraldo Alckmin, Brazilian Air Force officials, and Embraer executives.<\/p>\n
The KC-390 is a military aircraft developed jointly by Embraer and the FAB, which has invested R$ 4.9 billion according to information from the Presidency. The project for the model began in 2009, but the aircraft has not flown yet. According to Embraer, the first test unit is under assembly. The KC-390 may be used in carrying troops and cargo, fighting forest fires, and in-flight refuelling of other aircraft. <\/p>\n
According to Embraer, the contract provides that the aircraft’s sale hinges on additional documentation to become effective. The documents should be annexed to the agreement within 90 days, following which the company will add the order to its backlog.
