According to information released this Tuesday (3rd) on the newspaper Al Ahram, he is expected to take office at the Assembly on Saturday morning, when prime-minister Ibrahim Mahlab and his office will have to resign. Sisi was officially recognized winner of the election this Tuesday (3rd). In his first speech after the victory, he promised stability and a “bright future” to Egypt.

According to the Presidential Election Commission (PEC), Sisi obtained 96.91% of the votes, or 23.78 million. His opponent, leftist Hamdeen Sabahi, obtained 757,500 votes, the equivalent to 3.09% of the 25.57 million votes cast. According to information from the PEC, the election had a turnout of 47.5% of the population and 1.04 million votes were invalid.

The election should have been held on May 26th and 27th, but the PEC decided to extend the period until May 28th so more voters could cast their ballots. PEC’s chairman, Anwar El-Assi, claimed that there was around 10% turnout on the 28th. The candidates cannot appeal on the official result. The African Union, the Arab League and the European Union sent missions to monitor the election.

Member of the old regime

Sisi was part of the government of former president Mohamed Morsi’s, who named him commander of the Armed Forces after taking office, in 2012. Dissatisfaction of the population and the military drove the army to overthrow Morsi, in July last year, in a coup d’état supported by Sisi. He left the office he held only in the beginning of this year to run for president in May’s election.

Egypt faces political turmoil ever since public protests led to resignation of former president Hosni Mubarak, in February 2011. Morsi, who is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, was elected in June 2012 and overthrown a year later. A new election was summoned. In the meantime, Arab countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia sent financial help and supplied fuel to Egypt.

*Translated by Rodrigo Mendonça

Press release

Former Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi is announced the winner of the election held between May 26th and 28th.

[106

0":"post-48101","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-foreign-affairs
Former Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi is announced the winner of the election held between May 26th and 28th.
["GET
