The measure was adopted by the Foreign Trade Chamber (Camex), the foreign trade regulator, to ensure the domestic supply of wheat. The aliquot was reduced from 10% to zero because Mercosur member countries, Brazil’s main suppliers of the cereal, are currently off season.

The tax exemption will remain in effect until August 15th and up to the limit of one million tonnes of wheat. The aliquot reduction was planned since May 22nd, when the Camex released a communiqué saying it was looking into the possibility of reducing the tax.

Also this Tuesday, the Camex released two resolutions to reduce import taxes on 250 capital goods and computer and telecommunication goods not currently produced in Brazil. Among the capital goods, 240 will have tariffs reduced from 14% to 2%. Out of these, 96 are newly granted and 144 are having the exemption renewed. Among the computer and telecommunication goods, 10 products will have tariffs reduced from 16% to 2%, being two newly granted and eight renewed.

According to the Camex, the sectors which will benefit the most from the lifts are oil, mining, capital good, car and car parts. These products are mainly imported from the United States, Japan, Germany, China and Sweden. The aliquot reductions are already in effect and will remain until December 31st 2015, as announced on the Federal Official Gazette.

*Translated by Rodrigo Mendonça

Measure was adopted to ensure the domestic supply.
