São Paulo – Arabic poetry will be part of the Mário de Andrade Library’s programme this Tuesday (16th), at 7:30pm, in São Paulo. A recital of Arab and Brazilian poems will be promoted by the Lebanese Research and Culture Centre (CPCL, in the Portuguese acronym). The CPCL is a group formed by Brazilian intellectuals to do research into Arab culture and politics.<\/p>\n
According to CPCL president Kháled Fayez Mahassen, the recital’s goal is to spread Arab culture in Brazil. This sort of event, Mahassen explains, attracts mainly poets and people who are interested in culture. The recital will be open to the general public and is free of charge.<\/p>\n
The poems will be recited by Mahassen, who is Lebanese, and by Brazilian poets and artists such as Wilson de Oliveira Jaza, Marcelo Ariel, Rosana Piccolo, Célia Abila, Celso Vegro, Fabrício Slaviero, Claudio Daniel and Chiu Yi Chih. The poems will be read in Arabic and also in Portuguese, according to the president of the CPCL.<\/p>\n
Mahassen will speak briefly about the Sabra and Shatila massacre – the slaughter of Palestinian and Lebanese civilian refugees who lived in Lebanon in September 1982. The recital will mark the date of the massacre.<\/p>\n
Mário de Andrade Library is one of the main public libraries in the city of São Paulo. Founded in 1925 with the collection of the São Paulo City Council, the library is located in the city’s old town. In addition to being a place for reading, the space hosts art and culture events.<\/p>\n
