São Paulo – The Brazilian Air Force (FAB, in the Portuguese acronym) and the Swedish jet fighter manufacturing company Saab have announced this Monday (27th) the signing of an agreement last Friday (24th) for the purchase of 36 jet fighters by Brazil. The agreement is estimated to be worth R$ 13.4 billion (US$ 5.5 billion) and provides for deliveries of Gripen N\/G aircraft from 2019 to 2024, as well as technology transfer, training and logistical support. <\/p>\n
The Swedish manufacturer’s jets were selected by the Brazilian government to be used by the FAB in December last year. They won the FX-2 tender against military aircraft by the United States’ Boeing and France’s Dassault. Saab president and CEO Hakan Buskhe said the company is providing technology and jet fighter construction expertise to Brazil. Embraer will lead manufacturing operations in Brazil, but other defence industry companies will take part in the project. <\/p>\n
The Brazilian government has ordered 28 single-seat jets and eight two-seater ones. According to the FAB, the first unit to receive the new aircraft will be 1º Grupo de Defesa Aérea (the 1st Air Defence Group), in Anápolis, Goiás. The squadron has no aircraft at this time because the old Mirage 2000 models were retired in late 2013. The FAB is now in talks with Gripen for the lease of older jets until the new ones are delivered. <\/p>\n
