The amount is up 4.8% from the R$ 9.2 billion (US$ 3.6 billion) in the comparable year-ago period.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The expansion of credit for tourism is the outcome of the recognition, on the part of banks, of the importance of tourism as an economic activity. The ministry is putting in great efforts to show financial institutions that the industry is worth investing in,&rdquo; said the minister of Tourism, Vinicius Lages, according to information released by the ministry. <\/p>\n<p>The Brazilian Federal Savings Bank accounted for 52.7% of financing, followed by the Bank of Brazil, at 38.4%. The bulk of demand originated from the hotel industry.
