This Monday 12th, news agency Reuters has quoted the governor of the Central Bank of Tunisia, Chadli Ayari, as saying that in January alone, US$ 750 million worth of bonds maturing in ten years will likely be issued. An additional US$ 1 billion sukuk-type bonds should be issued by the end of quarter three this year.

Sukuk are bonds issued by a country or enterprise in accordance with Islamic law. They do not pay interest. Usually, those who invest in sukuk accrue returns from investments made by the issuing government or business.

Tunisia completed its political transition late last year, and is now looking to spur its own economy. The country is seeking international partners. One such partner, the International Monetary Fund, approved a loan program worth US$ 1.74 billion in 2012, provided that the Tunisian government would carry out economic reform. Other parties have also committed to providing loans to Tunisia.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

By quarter three this year, the country will have issued a combined US$ 1.75 billion in bonds.
