While total exports from Brazil dropped by 19.6% in volume and 23% in revenues in January and February, sales to the UAE soared by 49.2% in quantity and 52.1% in earnings.

The data are from the Brazilian Footwear Industry Association (Abicalçados). The UAE was the 11th leading destination of Brazilian shoe exports in the first two months. Sales reached 399,000 pairs of shoes and fetched US$ 3.8 million. Average price per pair of shoes purchased was up 2%.

Saudi Arabia was the other Arab country on Brazil’s top-20 export target list in January and February. However, sales volume declined by 32.3% to 321,400 pairs, and by 41.1% in revenues to US$ 3 million. The average price of shoes sold to Saudi Arabia was down 13% from January and February 2014.

Overall, 20.8 million pairs of footwear were shipped abroad from Brazil, grossing US$ 150 million. The decline came in spite of the US dollar price hike. The leading buying country was the United States, followed by France, Russia, Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, Angola, United Kingdom, Italy and Colombia. Abicalçados reports that data for the early months of the year comprise past deals, hence sales didn’t go up.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

Press Release/Couromoda

Total foreign sales revenues declined by 23% in January and February.
