Imports reached US$ 4.46 billion, down 10.5%.

The result was a US$ 744 million trade deficit, whereas in April 2014 there was a US$ 738 million surplus, according to data from the Algerian Customs’ National Centre of Data Processing and Statistics (CNIS, in French) released this Tuesday (26th) by Algérie Presse Service (APS).

Oil, gas and their products account for the near entirety of exports from Algeria. Therefore, the cheap oil affects the country’s bilateral trade, which is habitually on the surplus side.

Conversely, imports declined significantly for autos and pharmaceuticals. Imports also dropped for foodstuffs such as dairy, meats, sugar, coffee and tea. However, imports increased for cereals like wheat, barley and maize, as well as for legumes.

Imports declined for building materials and industry inputs such as cement, wood, iron and steel wires, flat-rolled products and iron rods, and increased for agricultural and industrial equipment.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

APS

Habitually on a surplus, the country’s trade balance swung to a US$ 744 million deficit last month.

[91

0":"post-51103","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-economy
["GET
