According to data released this Thursday (28th) by the International Labor Organization (ILO), the reasons were regional tensions, the stalled peace process with Israel and the effects of the war in Gaza in July 2014.

The information was released in the annual ILO report on the situation of workers in the occupied territories, slated for presentation as of next Monday (1st) in Geneva. The document says 27% of the working-age population in Palestine are out of work.

According to ILO’s director Guy Ryder, the Israeli occupation and settlements in the occupied territories prevents the development of a viable, productive Palestinian economy, “which could provide sufficient opportunities in terms of decent work.” He said that if the trend continues, the “scope for such opportunities will shrink further.”

The report shows that in 2014, unemployment rates in the West Bank and Gaza were respectively 17.7% and 43.9%. The rates for males and females in both territories were 23.9% and 38.5%. Over 40% of young people aged 15 to 24 were jobless.

Many Palestinians have found work in the Israeli labor market. According to the report, 107,000 Palestinians are active in the Israeli economy, but one third of them work in unregulated conditions.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

An International Labor Organization study shows 338,000 people were jobless in the occupied territories in 2014.

[91

0":"post-51124","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-economy
An International Labor Organization study shows 338,000 people were jobless in the occupied territories in 2014.
["GET
