It will be part of discussions of the Brazilian Dry Beans Forum 2015, to take place from June 24th to 26th at Hotel Recanto Cataratas, in a lecture given by Paulo Henrique Ribeiro de Aguiar, responsible for the sourcing and processing of beans for exports of the Agroindustry Cooperative Águas Frias (Cooperáguas). The cooperative sells to both regions.

Aguiar was invited to give the lecture precisely because of Cooperáguas’s experience in the area. The main focus of the lecture, however, won’t be the cooperative’s operation. The goal is to show the potential that Brazil displays to produce the beans that the world consumes. Aguiar points out that the country cultivates especially carioca beans, which doesn’t have a demand for them abroad, and black beans, which has some demand. Not even caupi, which is exported by Cooperáguas, has a high demand in the world.

“We can produce what the world buys”, he says, reminding that Brazil has the climate, soil, temperatures and altitude to produce any type of product. His suggestion is for producers to research what each country consumes so then the technologies, or cultivars, can be developed and produced. One of the types of beans widely consumed in the world is the Green Moong Dal (GMD), which is eaten as sprouts in some dishes.

Currently, beans production is spread throughout Brazil, according to Aguiar. The state of Paraná is the main producer, but it’s also produced in other states such as Mato Grosso, São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Minas Gerais, Goiás and Mato Grosso do Sul. Data from the National Supply Company (Conab) shows that Brazil produced 3.43 million tons of beans last year and should produce 3.41 million tons this year. Exports reached 51,700 tons from January to May of this year, according to data from the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC).

The Brazilian Dry Beans Forum will be the first space for networking and discussion of the production network, according to Cooperáguas employee. The goal of the event is to gather from producers to researchers, seed and input suppliers, retailers, packers, exporters, importers and consumers. Aguiar states that the production network is new as a current large-production structure and doesn’t have the habit of gathering for discussions. The Forum is promoted by the Brazilian Institute for Beans (Ibrafe), which works for the interests of the production network of beans.

Cooperáguas has more than 2,000 members, producers that work also with other cultures besides beans. The latter is produced in Mato Grosso state. Cooperáguas’ central office is at Águas Frias, a town in Santa Catarina state, and other offices in the towns of Campos de Júlio and Sorriso, both in Mato Grosso state. The cooperative exports more than half of what it produces of caupi beans to countries such as India, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, Pakistan, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Besides the lecture “Exports – Middle East and Asia open doors”, which will be given by Aguiar, other topics to be discussed in the meeting are gourmet beans, marketing of the product, production of chickpea in Cerrado (savannah-like region), global market for beans, its consumption in schools, among others. Registration is paid.

Service

Brazilian Dry Beans Forum 2015
From June 24th to 26th
Hotel Recanto Cataratas – Foz do Iguaçu – Paraná
Further information: http://www.forumfeijao.com.br/

*Translated by Sérgio Kakitani

Press Release

Brazilian Dry Beans Forum will gather from producers to researchers next week at Foz do Iguaçu.
