São Paulo – The Brazilian government released a statement with its “deepest regret” for the death of at least 717 people that were taking part in the Hajj, an annual pilgrimage of Muslims to Mecca, this Thursday, in Mina, in the outskirts of the holy city, in Saudi Arabia. The deaths occurred during a stampede when pilgrims were taking part of the “stoning of the devil” ritual, one of the last of the Hajj. There aren’t information yet about what caused the stampede.<\/p>\n
In addition to the dead, there are more than 800 people injured. This is not the first time that stampedes followed by deaths during this ritual occurs, but the Saudi government had invested heavily to improve infrastructure of the place at the end of last decade with the goal to avoid accidents.<\/p>\n
“The Brazilian government expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the Saudi government and people, and sympathizes with the great Islamic community around the world”, says the statement by the Ministry of Foreign Relations (Itamaraty).<\/p>\n
The statement adds that the Brazilian embassy in Riyadh, the Saudi capital, doesn’t have any records of Brazilian citizens among the victims.<\/p>\n
