São Paulo – The 193 member states of the United Nations (UN) have unanimously adopted the post-2015 development agenda, whose main pillar is sustainable development, at the UN’s summit devoted to the topic this Friday (25th) in New York. The new agenda outlines 17 goals to be reached by 2030 and replaces the declaration of millennium development goals, which set targets to be met by 2015.<\/p>\n

The new goals are the following: ending poverty in the world; achieving zero hunger, food security, improved nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture; ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages; ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all; achieving gender equality and empower all women and girls; ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all; ensuring affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all; and promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all. <\/p>\n
And the goals go on: building resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation; reducing inequality within and among countries; making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable; ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns; taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts; conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development; protecting, restoring and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems; promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, providing access to justice for all and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels; and strengthening the means of implementation and revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development. <\/p>\n
"The new agenda is a promise by leaders to all people everywhere. It is a universal, integrated and transformative vision for a better world,” said UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon in a press release. “The true test of commitment to Agenda 2030 will be implementation. We need action from everyone, everywhere,” he added.<\/p>\n
“The adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the World Summit, which opens today, is an important sign of hope,” said Pope Francis in his address to the UN General Assembly shortly before the agenda’s approval.<\/p>\n
