The North African country is preparing investments in several categories of the transportation sector that should reach USD 100 billion in the next few years. From February 15th to 18th, the capital Algiers will host the 3rd International Exhibition of Transports, Logistics and Mobility.

According to information provided by the exhibition’s organization, approximately 200 exhibitors and four thousand visitors are expected. In this event, the investments that the country is expecting for the next few years will be presented.

One of the sectors selected is the railway sector. Algeria has four thousand kilometers of track and a expansion plan of the network that is already being executed will add two thousand kilometers to it. Another project, with 6,500 kilometers of track is under study. These additions to the railway network will be followed by the purchase of new trains, which could carry passengers in speeds up to 220 km per hour and cargo up to 120 km per hour. Currently, in the Arab country, 97% of goods are transported through railways.

The Algerian airports were modernized in the last few years. However, a new airport should be open in Algiers until 2018. The terminal will receive investments estimated in EUR 317 million, or approximately USD 348 million. When ready, it could receive up to 10 million passengers per year.

Other sectors are also the target of investments. Among the urban mobility projects are the conclusion of a subway line in Algiers and the construction of a subway network in Oran, the country’s second largest city. There are projects for the construction of tram lines in the cities of Constantine and Ouargla, among others. Cable cars should be built in five cities, among them Algiers. In maritime transportation, the highlight is the modernization of the Oran Port, which should cost USD 10.5 million, and the expansion of the maritime safety system of other ports.

3rd International Exhibition of Transports, Logistics and Mobility
From February 15th to 18th, 2016, Algiers
Information: http://infrastructure-dz.com/pages/fr/index.php

*Translated by Sérgio Kakitani

Amal Belalloufi/AFP

Expansion of highways, railways and a new airport will be carried on to increase the country’s transportation capacity.

[91

0":"post-52944","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-economy
Expansion of highways, railways and a new airport will be carried on to increase the country’s transportation capacity.
["GET
